Stripe vs. Gumroad isn't really a comparison between two payment processors — because Gumroad isn't one. Gumroad is a hosted storefront, checkout, and (since January 1, 2025) a full Merchant of Record for creators selling digital products, memberships, and courses. Stripe is raw payment infrastructure. The trade between them is the cleanest in payments: total simplicity versus total cost. Gumroad gets you selling in an afternoon with zero tax paperwork, for roughly 13–21% of every sale. Stripe costs about 3%. Everything else is yours to build and manage.

If you've read older comparisons (including an older version of this one) describing Gumroad's $10-a-month plans or sliding-scale fees: those are gone. Gumroad has changed its pricing model twice since 2021. Here's what it actually costs now.

Gumroad's real fees in 2026

Two mechanics worth knowing before they surprise you:

What the 10% actually buys: Merchant of Record

Here's the part most "Gumroad takes too much" takes skip. Since January 2025, Gumroad is the seller of record on every transaction — meaning Gumroad, not you, is legally responsible for collecting and remitting sales tax, VAT, and GST across every jurisdiction your buyers live in. If you've never dealt with EU VAT on digital goods, trust us. This is real work, with real penalties.

On Stripe, you are the merchant of record. Stripe Tax will calculate what you owe beautifully — but registering, filing, and remitting in each jurisdiction remains your job (or your accountant's bill). Part of Gumroad's 10% is genuine compliance outsourcing, not rent. Whether it's worth 10% depends entirely on your volume. That's the actual decision.

The crossover math

One exception: Discover revenue. That's traffic Gumroad brought you, and 30% of sales you wouldn't otherwise have made is a fine deal. Judge Discover revenue as marketing spend, not fees.

Graduating to Stripe: what changes

Moving to Stripe means assembling your own stack — Payment Links or Checkout (no code required, despite Stripe's developer reputation), a delivery mechanism for your files or content, Stripe Tax plus a registration/filing plan, and Stripe Billing (0.7% of billing volume) if you sell memberships. That's the whole list. In exchange: ~3% fees, your own customer relationships and data, and no platform between you and your revenue.

And one thing creators rarely have on day one after leaving a platform: visibility. If you sell memberships or subscriptions, Baremetrics connects natively to Stripe and gives you MRR, churn, LTV, and trial conversion from the moment you switch on — metrics Gumroad never showed you. Membership creators also meet failed payments for the first time (Gumroad handled retries invisibly); Recover automates retries and card-update emails, and the median customer earns back roughly 8× its cost in a month, per our May 2026 recovery benchmark. Try it free.

(Honest scoping: Baremetrics works with Stripe and other supported billing platforms — it can't connect to Gumroad itself, because as Merchant of Record, Gumroad owns the transaction data. It's the tool for after you graduate.)
